Domestic cats have been a part of human life for thousands of years. From their wild origins as fierce predators to the beloved lap warmers of today, cats have come a long way in terms of domestication and companionship. In this blog post, we’ll explore the history behind our feline friends and how they became such an important part of modern culture.
The first evidence that humans ever kept cats as pets dates back more than 9500 years ago in Cyprus—where archaeologists discovered cat bones buried alongside those belonging to humans! It is believed that early farmers used these animals to keep rodents away from crops, which helped them store food for longer periods without it being eaten by vermin or spoiled by mold. As time passed, people began keeping these animals around not only because they were useful but also because they found them endearing; eventually leading to full-blown domestication over many generations.
As domesticating cats spread throughout Europe during the Middle Ages, so did superstitions surrounding them—believing some breeds had magical powers or could ward off evil spirits if kept indoors at night (which probably made sense considering most felines are nocturnal). Unfortunately this led people down a dark path where black cats were seen as symbols associated with witchcraft and bad luck; something which still lingers today despite its inaccuracy!
By the 19th century however things changed drastically when Queen Victoria declared her love for all things feline - making it fashionable amongst upper classes across England (and later other countries) who wanted their own pet kitties too! This newfound popularity saw breeders create specific types based on size/color/personality traits etc., resulting in what we now know as “purebreds” like Siamese & Persian's – both incredibly popular choices even today!
Ultimately though regardless if you own one from an ancient lineage or just picked up your furry friend from your local shelter – there is no denying that domestic felines bring joy into homes everywhere with their unique personalities & affectionate nature…making us wonder why anyone would want anything else?
